It is generally not convienient to drive to cities outside of Texas in the United States. It can take you multiple days. It's best to check Kayak for flights and potential discounts. Be careful about prices during the holiday seasons. Off-season tickets are usually about $200-300 round-trip.

 

Major Tourist Cities

 

New York, NY 

About a four hour plane ride to the northeast, you can visit some of the nation's most famous places in New York, such as Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building. Be prepared for food and travel prices that are much higher than Austin's.

 

San Francisco, CA

A three to four hour plane ride away, San Francisco is home to iconic locations like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and Fisherman's Wharf.

 

Los Angeles, CA 

A three hour plane ride west, or a 2 to 3 day road trip, you can visit Hollywood, Santa Monica Beach, the Chinese Theater, and plenty of other famous movie industry sites.

 

Chicago, IL 

About two hours and forty-five minutes by plane. Chicago has some of the best restaurants and theaters in the country, along with famous sports venues like Wrigley Field, and buildings like Willis Tower.

 

Washington, D.C., MD

The nation's capital, about a three and a half hour plane ride to the east, is home to major tourist destinations like the White House, the Washington Monument, and the Smithsonian museum.
