  • Eraser vs Rubber:rubber in the US can be used as slang for a condom, so people may not understand that you are asking for something to erase things

  • College=University/Uni

  • Elevator=Lift

  • Semi-Truck/18 wheeler=Lorry

  • Parking lot=Car park

  • First floor=Ground floor / Rez-de-chaussée

  • High School=Secondary School

  • Popsicle=Ice Lolly

  • Bonnet & Boot=Hood & Trunk

  • Cool=Sound

  • Make a move [on someone]/to hit on=to flirt with someone

  • Y'all='you all' or 'you guys'

  • YOLO=You Only Live Once

  • Bae=baby, sweetie, etc

  • Ratchet=very unclassy

  • Turn up/Turn down=get drunk / sober up 

  • Bailing=to leave or not show up to something without reason

  • Badass=really cool

  • Knocked up=pregnant

  • To go=take away, get food to go

  • "Go the extra mile"=do more than is expected of you

  • "grey area"=it is undefined, uncategorized, unsure of how the rules apply

  • "hands are tied"=no control of the situation 

  • "You have your work cut out for you"=a particularly difficult assignment 

  • "Hit the nail on the head"=did the job 100% correctly

  • "In the black"/"In the red"=a company is in the black when they are making a profit, they are losing money when they are in the red

  • "nine-to-five"=a normal job, from 9am to 5pm

  • "no strings attached"=you are given something without anything expected in return

  • "put all your eggs in one basket"=to bet everything on one thing

  • "put the cart before the horse"=do things in the wrong order

  • "start/get off on the wrong/right foot"=to start something negatively/positively

  • "elephant in the room"=a big and obvious problem that nobody wants to talk about
